Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Zenyatta received a 127-pound weight assignment for her first start of the year in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1) on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
Zenyatta’s impost is eight pounds heavier than multiple graded stakes winner Tuscan Evening (Ire), who received the second-highest assignment at 119 pounds.
Santa Maria Handicap (G2) winner St Trinians (GB) is next at 117 pounds, although she is highly unlikely to start after finishing sixth in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) on March 6.
Zenyatta would spot 11 pounds to Mushka, who was pegged at 116 after finishing fifth in the Santa Maria in her first start of the year. She won the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) via disqualification last fall and finished second to Zenyatta’s stablemate, Life Is Sweet, in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1).
La Canada Stakes (G2) winner Striking Dancer was assigned 115 pounds.
Zenyatta carried 126 pounds to victory in the Milady Handicap (G2) last May in her first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) the previous October.
After the Milady, she won the Vanity Handicap (G1) with 129 pounds, the heaviest assignment of her undefeated career.
