Zenyatta drills six furlongs at Hollywood

Undefeated two-time champion older female Zenyatta drilled six furlongs on Friday at Hollywood Park as she prepares for her six-year-old debut.

The Street Cry (Ire) mare drilled a handy six furlongs in a bullet 1:11.80 on the synthetic Cushion Track surface. The workout ranked fastest of 13 timed moves at the distance. The Daily Racing Form reported that Zenyatta worked in company with unraced four-year-old El Vino, tracking her stablemate before pulling away in the final furlong.

Trained by John Shirreffs for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, Zenyatta has been working regularly since December in preparation for a start in the $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap (G1) on March 13 at Santa Anita Park. The race will be her first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on November 7.

On April 9, Zenyatta is expected to face Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra for the first time in the $5-million Apple Blossom Invitational Stakes (G1) at Oaklawn Park.
