Group 2 winner Black Bear Island dead

Posted: Wednesday, March 03, 2010 8:45 PM

Black Bear Island (Ire), the Totesport.com Dante Stakes (Eng-G2) winner and Secretariat Stakes (G1) runner-up last year who had not raced since finishing eighth in the Hollywood Derby (G1) on November 29, was euthanized on February 25 because of an ankle injury he sustained during a morning workout.

Black Bear Island was preparing for a 2010 turf campaign when the injury occurred. Trainer Julio Canani told Daily Racing Form that the injuries were too severe to save the four-year-old Sadler’s Wells colt.

Canani trained Black Bear Island for R. D. Hubbard, Ed Allred, and Robert Masterson, a partnership that acquired the colt from Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith ahead of his second-place finish in the Secretariat.

Black Bear Island ran for trainer Aidan O’Brien in that race before shipping West to Canani’s barn. He subsequently finished sixth in an optional claiming race before his final career start in the Hollywood Derby.

Tower Bloodstock bred Black Bear Island, who is out of the unraced Darshaan mare Kasora. He was a full brother to two-time U.S. champion, English and Irish classic winner, and sire High Chaparral (Ire).
