Another race, another dominant victory for talented three-year-old Comedero.
The Posse gelding controlled the pace in the $400,000 Red Legend Stakes on Saturday night at Charles Town Races, opened a commanding seven-length advantage near the eighth pole, and coasted to victory under Robby Albarado (video). Comedero won by 2 1/4 lengths as the 1-to-5 favorite and completed the seven-furlong race for three-year-olds in 1:25.57 on a track rated as fast.
“He had it won, so there was no need,” Albarado said of cruising through the final sixteenth rather than pushing him to win by a huge margin. “He’s one fast horse, that’s for sure.”
Peter Redekop purchased Comedero privately after he won his debut by 12 1/2 lengths and followed with a 4 1/2-length romp in the Razorback Futurity, both at Louisiana Downs, for previous owner Burning Sands Stable and previous trainer Morris Nicks.
Transferred to Mike Stidham before his third start, he has continued to amass victories. He improved to eight wins in nine starts with the Red Legend win and is unbeaten in sprint races. His only career defeat came in the Springboard Mile Stakes in December at Remington Park.
This year, Comedero is five for five with clear wins in each of his starts and a combined margin of victory of 29 1/2 lengths. The bay gelding out of stakes-placed winner Pawnee Patti, by Sir Richard Lewis, entered the Red Legend off a 3 3/4-length romp in the Chick Lang Stakes Presented by Apple Ford (G3) on the Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard on May 15 at Pimlico Race Course. He was bred by McDowell Farm.
“It’s hard to describe,” Stidham said after another dominant victory. “It’s hard to describe what it feels like to have a horse you can point towards these kind of races down the line.”
The Red Legend Stakes was one of six stakes on Saturday night’s Charles Town Sprint Festival.
In other action, My Friend Nev upset local star Russell Road in the $100,000 Wild and Wonderful Stakes for three-year-olds and older (video). My Friend Nev closed from well off the pace to collar Nay’s Tap and Russell Road in the closing strides to prevail at 20.70-to-1 odds for trainer Jamie Ness and owner Midwest Thoroughbreds.
My Friend Nev covered seven furlongs in 1:25.38, edging Nay’s Tap by a neck with Russell Road, a winner of ten career stakes at Charles Town, another neck back in third.
Bred in Kentucky by Loch Lea Farm, My Friend Nev secured his first stakes win and improved to seven wins from 24 starts.
Immortal Eyes dueled for the early lead with Ju Jitsu Jax in the $100,000 Charles Town Invitational Dash Stakes and outlasted that foe for a half-length win (video). The Greatness gelding completed 4 1/2 furlongs in :50.71 to land his first stakes win for trainer Damon Dilodovico and owner Robert Abbo Racing Stable.
Down Town Allen set the pace and powered to a 4 1/4-length score in the $100,000 Lady Charles Town Stakes, a 4 1/2-furlong race for three-year-old fillies (video). The John Casey homebred filly covered the distance in :51.28 for her sixth win in 11 starts and fifth stakes victory.
