Illinois stars come out for Prairie State Festival

Posted: Friday, June 18, 2010 5:49 PM

by Tim Nichols

Arlington Park on Saturday will host its Prairie State Festival card, which features six stakes worth $100,000 each for Illinois-breds.

Six Illinois champions of 2009 are among 64 horses for the entered in various races—Devient Behavior, Nicks, Mighty Rule, Cumulonimble, Sweet Lemon Chello, and Free Fighter.

The $100,000 Black Tie Affair Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the turf drew nine three-year-olds and older. Stakes winner Princeville Condo, a five-year-old gelding trained by Michele Boyce, was made the 2-to-1 morning-line favorite. The Morluc gelding enters off a runner-up finish in the off-the-turf Illinois Owners Stakes on May 15.

Nicks will try for her third win in her last four starts when she starts the $100,000 Isaac Murphy Handicap at six furlongs on the main track. The six-year-old Salt Lake mare won an optional claiming race and the Governor’s Lady Handicap, both at Hawthorne Race Course this spring, prior to finishing second in the Prairie Rose Stakes on May 22 at Prairie Meadows Racetrack in her most recent start. She was made the 2-to-1 morning-line favorite and will break from the outside post in the field of eight fillies and mares.

The $100,000 Lincoln Heritage Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the turf drew a full field of 14 fillies and mares. Two Bucks To Show’s multiple stakes-placed winner Cumulonimble, a four-year-old by Stormy Atlantic, was made the 5-to-2 morning-line favorite while Souper Miss, five-year-old by Alphabet Soup, will try bounce back from an unplaced finish in the Arlington Matron Handicap (G3) in her most recent start after winning four straight races.

The $100,000 Purple Violet Stakes, a one-turn mile race on the main track, drew 12 three-year-old fillies, including stakes winner Wild Hope, by Quaker Ridge, and Sugared Toast, by Newfoundland, who enters on a two-race winning streak.

Mighty Rule, a seven-year-old Gilded Time gelding, has finished no worse than second in his last six races and will try for a fifth career stakes win in the $100,000 White Oak Handicap. The six-furlong race drew 11 three-year-olds or older.

The card concludes with the $100,000 Springfield Stakes at one mile three-year-olds. Leading the field of nine is recent stakes winner Big Looie, by Military, who enters off a three-quarter-length score in the Land of Lincoln Stakes on April 24 at Hawthorne.
