Classic-placed Jackson Bend to contest Pegasus

After finishing third in the Preakness Stakes (G1) (VIDEO), Jackson Bend will return to racing Saturday at Monmouth Park in the $200,000 Pegasus Stakes (G3), which has attracted an interesting mix of accomplished horses and improving horses.

Robert LaPenta’s and Fred Brei’s Jackson Bend pressed the pace throughout the Preakness and settled for third behind winner Lookin At Lucky and First Dude. By Hear No Evil, Jackson Bend amassed four stakes wins last year and has placed in four stakes races this year.

A winner of five of 11 starts, the consistent Jackson Bend has earned $817,820 for his connections. The 1 1/16-mile Pegasus is restricted to three-year-olds and serves as a prep for the $1-million Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) at 1 1/8 miles on August 1 at Monmouth.

While Jackson Bend is proven in stakes races, Gainesway Farm’s and Martin Cherry’s Afleet Express will make his stakes debut. The Afleet Alex colt rolled to a dominant 7 ¾-length victory in a seven-furlong allowance race on May 22 at Belmont Park.

Rounding out the entries for the Pegasus are Grade 3-placed Nacho Friend, who rolled to an easy allowance win two starts back at Pimlico Race Course; Tampa Bay Derby (G3) runner-up Schoolyard Dreams, who finished ninth in the Preakness; Soaring Empire, who defeated Afleet Express while winning a February 25 allowance race at Gulfstream Park; and Withers Stakes (G3) winner Afleet Again.
