Reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra breezed four furlongs on Monday morning in her final serious workout at Churchill Downs before an expected start on Saturday.

The four-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly breezed a half-mile in :49.20 under restraint from jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, fifth-fastest of 45 timed workouts at the distance. Churchill clockers caught fractional times of :12.60 and :25, and she galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.80.

“The weather’s great this morning—it’s a nice cool morning,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “Everything seemed very comfortable.”

Connections for Rachel Alexandra, winless in two starts as a four-year-old, are debating a number of options for her next start on Saturday. Races being considered include the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) or Fleur De Lis Handicap (G2) at Churchill Downs, the Ogden Phipps Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park, and the Obeah Stakes (G3) at Delaware Park.

I would like to see this joke of a HHOTY, run and win a grade 1 race, It sure is a shame , she set the bar last year, and she cant even meet her own standard.

Disappointed the Horse of the Year is running in a G2 but best of luck to her.

That slow work was in the slop, and her first after the La Troienne. This one was only a 4 furlong work so the gallop out in insignificant. I'm only interested (and excited) about her being under restraint. Can't wait for the weekend.

I guess it's up to the trainer Jess Jackson! Oh!, I mean Steve Assmussen.
