Four races possible for Rachel Alexandra’s next start

Posted: Tuesday, June 01, 2010 3:20 PM

RACHEL ALEXANDRA

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club

Owner Jess Jackson listed four races on June 12 as possible targets for Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra.

Jackson said the $600,000 Stephen Foster (G1) and $200,000 Fleur de Lis (G2) Handicaps at Churchill Downs are being considered, along with the $250,000 Ogden Phipps Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park and $150,000 Obeah Stakes (G3) at Delaware Park.

The Obeah is the only one of the four races that is not a handicap. Weight assignments will be issued on Saturday for the Stephen Foster, Fleur de Lis, and Ogden Phipps.

The Stephen Foster, Fleur de Lis, and Obeah are all two-turn races at 1 1/8 miles. The Ogden Phipps is 1 1/16 miles around one turn.

Rachel Alexandra will pursue her first victory of the year, after finishing second by three-quarters of a length to Zardana (Arg) in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes on March 13 at Fair Grounds and second by a head to Unrivaled Belle in the La Troienne Stakes (G2) on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

The four-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly breezed six furlongs in 1:11.20 on Monday at Churchill Downs. She galloped out one mile in 1:38.

“Rachel Alexandra’s condition continues to improve,” Jackson said. “We were impressed with Rachel’s Memorial Day work. … Our ultimate goal has not changed in scheduling Rachel Alexandra’s campaign this year.  We are getting her back to her fitness level of last year with the long-term hope to race her in the Breeders Cup [World Championships] this fall.”

Although I live 30 minutes from Delaware Park, and would definitely be there if she ran there....it would be cool to see Rachel go against the boys-again-this time at Churchill Downs. GO RACHEL!!
