Grade 2 winner Bold Chieftain, a career earner of $1,542,141, has been retired by trainer Bill Morey after finishing last of six in the California Dreamin’ Handicap on July 25 at Del Mar.

Morey owns and bred the game seven-year-old Chief Seattle horse in partnership with Dwaine Hall, the Langbein Trust, and Ken Robinson. Morey said Bold Chieftain will be sent to Applebite Farms in Stockton, California, to await final plans for a stud career.

"We're letting him down now," Morey said, "[Applebite Farms has] shown a lot of interest in [standing] him, so we're sending him there now. There has been other interest shown but a final decision hasn't been made."

Bold Chieftain won 17 of 38 career starts, including at least one stakes win every year since 2006, and raced exclusively in California throughout his career.. His 13 career stakes wins include this year’s San Francisco Mile Stakes (G2) and Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes.

"The fun we had with this horse I just can't put into words," Morey told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It's just been a wonderful ride. It was a little gloomy the other day when he ran poorly, and I said, 'That's it.' I tried to remember the good days and not that day. He had so many good ones and very few bad ones."

California-bred Bold Chieftain is out of stakes-placed winner Hooked On Music, by Seattle Dancer.

"He always did his job, and we hope he enjoys phase two of his life,” Morey said. "We're not interested in standing him ourselves, but we'd like to have a couple of breeding rights for our own mares."

He's been a steady, dependable horse with a lot of heart. I made a point of watching whenever he ran and am so glad to see his bloodline having a chance to carry on. Thanks for doing this for him.

Fantastic, game horse. Would love to see him stand in California as the best representative of Seattle Slew we currently have! I'll send mares to him!

Cudos to Bill Morey, Jr, Manny Badilla (assistant trainer) and the rest of the crew for the great job they have done with "The Chief."
