Workin for Hops was the 3-to-2 favorite among nine in the $200,000 American Derby (G2), a prep for the Secretariat Stakes (G1), and did nothing to disappoint his backers as he stalked the pace early before driving to an easy 2 ¼-length victory at Arlington Park on Saturday. The American Derby was one of three graded stakes races on the track’s Arlington Million Preview Day.

Workin for Hops tracked the early pace of Marcello before moving to the lead entering the far turn and pulling away from the field, covering 1 3/16 miles in 1:55.47 on turf rated as firm.

“We found ourselves close to the front end and slow fractions developed,” winning jockey Francisco Torres said. “When I called on him, he prevailed.”

The American Derby is the second leg of the Mid-America Triple, which opened with the Arlington Classic on May 22, also won by Workin for Hops. A victory in the Secretariat would make the City Zip gelding only the fourth horse to sweep the Triple and the first since Honor Glide in 1997.

“If he’s doing good, that’s where we’re planning on going,” trainer Michael Stidham said.

Out of the winning Citidancer mare Citi Pearl, Workin for Hops won for the fifth time from eight starts and pushed his career earnings to $356,176.
