William Deburgh’s Tuscan Evening (Ire) rolled to her sixth consecutive graded stakes victory on Saturday in the $150,000 Modesty Handicap (G3) at Arlington Park, one of three graded stakes races on the track’s Arlington Million Preview Day.
Making her first start outside of California since arriving in the United States last year, the five-year-old Oasis Dream (GB) mare, the 4-to-5 favorite with regular rider Rafael Bejarano aboard, took her preferred place in front of the pack in the 1 3/16-mile turf contest and never was headed en route to a half-length victory over longshot Eclair de Lune (Ger).
Grade 1 winner Hot Cha Cha finished another 1 ½ lengths back in third as Tuscan Evening crossed the finish line in 1:55.11 on a turf course rated as firm.
“I’m glad I didn’t see too much speed in the race,” Bejarano said. “She was really comfortable on the lead and set the pace.”
The Modesty is a prep for Beverly D. Stakes (G1) on August 21 at Arlington. The top three finishers in the Modesty will have their entry and starting fees waived for that race.
“I would love to come back for the Beverly D.,” winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “That’s why we came here today—to see if she likes the course and to see if she would ship well.”
Out of the winning Group 3-placed Suave Dancer mare The Faraway Tree, Tuscan Evening won for the 12th time from 27 starts and increased her career earnings $1,138,508.

Tuscan Evening has really become a wrecking machine racing in America. Having now won 6 straight and 7 of her last 8. With her only loss coming in a 2nd place finish to the great mare Ventura in November's Matriarch Stakes. Tuscan evening ran pretty well in the UK before coming to America. But she didn't have wins. She had a lot of 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Including a 2nd place finish in the 2008 Irish 1000 Guineas. But this mare has really flourished racing in America. Taking down two other very good filly/mares in Rainbow View and Hot Cha Cha today.
