A number of Grade 1 winners and talented three-year-olds will take to the Arlington Park turf course on Saturday to participate in the track’s lucrative Arlington Million (G1) preview day card.
The $150,000 Arlington Handicap (G3) at 1¼ miles, a prep for the Arlington Million, drew three Grade 1 winners among its 11 entries.
Tom McCarthy’s General Quarters will make his Arlington debut on Saturday after finishing third in the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) on June 12 in his most recent start. The four-year-old Sky Mesa colt has placed in his last six races, most notably winning the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1) on May 1 in his second career start on turf.
Two-time Grade 1 winner Marsh Side will try to bounce back after a seventh-place finish in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) on March 6 in his most recent start. The seven-year-old by Gone West won the 2009 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (Can-G1) and ’08 Pattison Canadian International Stakes (Can-G1), both at Woodbine.
Just as Well, owned and trained by Jonathan Sheppard, will try for a repeat victory in the Arlington Handicap. The seven-year-old by A.P. Indy is winless in seven starts since the ’09 Arlington Handicap.
The $150,000 Modesty Handicap (G3) at 1 3/16 miles on the turf, a prep for the Beverly D. Stakes (G1), will be a star-studded affair.
Leading the way is recent Gamely Stakes (G1) winner Tuscan Evening (Ire). William Deburgh’s five-year-old Oasis Dream (Ire) mare will make her first start outside of California on Saturday since shipping to the U.S. last year. She has been perfect this season, winning all five starts at distances ranging from 6½ furlongs to 1¼ miles. She enters off a half-length win in the 1 1/8-mile Gamely on May 29.
Also entered are European champion Rainbow View and 2009 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) winner Hot Cha Cha.
Rainbow View will try for her third win in four starts this season as she enters off a third-place finish in the Nassau Stakes (Can-G2) on June 5 at Woodbine. Hot Cha Cha comes to Arlington off a three-quarter-length score in the Early Times Mint Julep Handicap (G3) on June 5 at Churchill Downs.
The race serves as a prep for the Beverly D. Stakes (G1) on August 21. The top three finishers will have their entry and starting fees waved for the Beverly D.
The $200,000 American Derby (G2), a 1 3/16-mile turf race, drew a competitive field of nine three-year-olds.
Among those featured are Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s former classic starter Dean’s Kitten. The Kitten’s Joy colt will try to regain the form he showed when winning the Lane’s End Stakes (G2) on March 27 at Turfway Park. Since that race, he finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and most recently fifth in the Colonial Turf Cup Stakes (G2) on June 19 at Colonial Downs.
Estrorace’s Workin for Hops, trained by Chris Block, finished second to Paddy O’Prado in the Colonial Turf Cup in his most recent start. The City Zip colt already owns a turf win at Arlington, capturing the 1 1/16-mile Arlington Classic Stakes on May 22.
Gleam of Hope enters in sharp form after winning the Jefferson Cup Stakes (G3) by 1¼ lengths on June 12 at Churchill Downs in his most recent start.
The American Derby serves as a prep for the Secretariat Stakes (G1) on August 21.
