Harold L. Queen’s homebred Big Drama justified his 9-to-5 favoritism in the $350,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) on Saturday at Calder Race Course, tracking the early speed of Go Go Shoot before taking command at the half-mile pole to post a 1½-length victory under jockey Eibar Coa.

The Smile Sprint is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, providing Big Drama with an automatic berth in the $2-million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on November 6.

“He’s grown up since last year,” winning trainer David Fawkes said. “He’s a bigger, stronger horse. We’ll keep him sprinting and hope to get to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Big Drama covered the six-furlong distance in 1:10.93 while holding off a game late run by runner-up Mambo Meister who was 3 ¼-lengths to the good of How’s Your Halo.

It was the seventh stakes victory by Big Drama who has now won eight races from 13 starts while bankrolling $1,459,560.

The four-year-old Montbrook colt is out of the unraced Notebook mare Riveting Drama.
