After starting the year in Dubai, Grade 1 winner Gayego will make his U.S. racing return on Saturday in the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park.
Godolphin Racing’s Gayego opened this season with a runner-up finish in a Group 3 race at Meydan before finishing eighth in the Gulf News Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) on March 27. The five-year-old Gilded Time horse will be making his first start since that race.
Last year, Gayego also started his season in Dubai before winning an allowance race at Saratoga Race Course and winning the Ancient Title Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park. He then finished a close fourth in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) (video).
Last year’s Malibu Stakes (G1) winner M One Rifle will try to secure his first win of the season as the four-year-old One Man Army gelding enters off a fourth-place finish in the Los Angeles Handicap (G3) on June 5 at Hollywood.
Also entered in Saturday’s seven-furlong test for three-year-olds and older is E Z’s Gentleman, who appears to be finding his best stride at age five. The Yankee Gentleman ridgling has placed in two graded stakes this year and won two other races. Trained by Bob Baffert, Arnold Zetcher’s E Z’s Gentleman enters off a runner-up finish in the Los Angeles.
Other horses entered in Saturday’s race include Tiznow Stakes winner Fantasy Free, Tiznow runner-up Bestdressed, Californian Stakes (G2) runner-up Sangaree, Los Angeles Handicap third-place finisher My Summer Slew, and New Bay, who enters off a victory in an optional claiming race on June 6 at Hollywood.

I'd be awfully surprise if Gayego doesn't win this race. He's a much better colt than even his record indicates. Many of the races that Gayego has lost, has been to horses over in Dubai. Which, quite naturally given the size of the purses in Dubai, draws many of the best horses in the world. But looking over this card. Gayego is clearly the class of this field. IMO.
