Jockey Jamie Theriot guided Alaina’s Aurora to an 8 1/2-length romp in the 13th race on Saturday at Fair Grounds to record his 2,000th career victory.
Theriot sent the B. J.’s Mark colt straight to the front in the six-furlong maiden claiming race and he never was seriously threatened, completing the distance in 1:11.87 on a track rated as fast to nail down the milestone win for Theriot.
A Lafayette, Louisiana, native, Theriot began his career riding at bush tracks before making his professional debut at 16 at Evangeline Downs in 1995.
Theriot, 30, is a regular on the Kentucky and Louisiana jockey circuits. He won his first Grade 1 race at Keeneland Race Course in 2007 aboard Purim in the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1). In the 2007-’08 Fair Grounds meet he set a meet record with 94 wins.
Theriot made his first trip to Saratoga Race Course last year and he guided Dublin to victory in the Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (G1) for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. He also has ridden graded stakes winners Blame, Tizaqueena, Dubai Majesty, Terrain, and Afternoon Stroll.
Theriot’s roots in racing run deep as his father, Harold, exercised horses and became a trainer. His uncle is jockey Larry Melancon. His family tree also includes Racing Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye and jockey Calvin Borel.
