Radiohead (GB), making his three-year-old debut in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, left little doubt that he could be a contender on the Triple Crown trail with a 3 ¼-length victory over five other Triple Crown nominees.
The Johannesburg colt tracked pacesetter General Maximus in the one-mile race before surging past in the stretch and pulling away under jockey Edgar Prado. Radiohead covered the distance in 1:35.90 on a track rated as fast for owners IEAH Stables, Pegasus Holding Group, Carmen Burrell, and Jonathan Harvey.
Homeboykris parlayed a ground-saving trip into a runner-up finish, a half-length clear of Call Shot. General Maximus weakened to fourth.
A Group 2 winner and twice Group 1-placed in England, Radiohead made his U.S. debut in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). He finished seventh, beaten by four lengths by winner Vale of York (Ire), for previous trainer Brian Meehan. Radiohead subsequently was transferred to the barn of Richard Dutrow Jr.
The chestnut colt is out of the Belong to Me mare Security Interest.
