Maragh scores 1,000th career win on Friday

Mint Maker closed with a rush from fifth in the stretch to win the fourth race at Gulfstream Park by a half-length on Friday, giving jockey Rajiv Maragh his 1,000th career victory.

A regular on the New York circuit, Maragh has posted 76 stakes wins, 21 of those graded stakes wins, in his career.

Among his top rides include Diamondrella (GB), whom he rode in victories in the 2009 First Lady (G1) and Just a Game (G1) Stakes, ‘09 Beldame (G1) and Ballerina (G1) Stakes winner Music Note, ’09 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1) winner Negligee, ’09 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) and Go For Wand Stakes (G1) winner Seventh Street, and ’08 Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Little Belle.

The 24-year-old rider, originally from Jamaica, won his first race in 2004 at Tampa Bay Downs. He went on to earn top apprentice honors at the Meadowlands that year. Last year he finished second among riders at the Belmont Park spring/summer meet with 71 wins.
