Rachel Alexandra delivers ‘ideal’ workout

Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra breezed six furlongs in 1:14 on Wednesday morning at Fair Grounds in her first workout at the distance this year.

The four-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly galloped out seven furlongs in 1:27 after posting fractions of :13, :25.20, :37.60, :49.80, and 1:02 under exercise rider Dominic Terry.

Trainer Steve Asmussen described the move as “ideal” for Rachel Alexandra as she prepares for a March 13 comeback in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes, scheduled to be her lone prep for a showdown with Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom Invitational Stakes (G1) on April 9.

Asmussen said Wednesday’s workout was “way easier” than her aggressive five-furlong breeze in 1:01.20 on February 18.

“Dom split off the right way with her, galloped her around the pole and let her work,” Asmussen said. “Dom did it to a ‘T,’ and if I wanted something different I should have asked him.”
