After less-than-impressive performances in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Radiohead (GB) and D’ Funnybone will try for their first wins on the 2010 Triple Crown trail on Saturday in the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
Radiohead, making his North American debut, finished a nonthreatening seventh in the Juvenile while D’ Funnybone pushed the pace before fading to last in the 13-horse field. Despite the disappointing finishes, both horses haven proven in the past to be worthy of competing against top-flight competition.
IEAH Stables thought so highly of Radiohead that it purchased an interest in the Johannesburg colt following his second-place finish in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (Eng-G1) on October 2 at Newmarket. From six starts in England, Radiohead won the Norfolk Stakes (Eng-G2) in June at Royal Ascot and finished third in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (Eng-G1) against older horses in August at York.
Radiohead will make his first start for trainer Rick Dutrow in the seven-furlong Hutcheson.
Prior to his last-place finish in the Juvenile, D’ Funnybone rolled to a pair of dominating wins. Also trained by Dutrow, the D’wildcat colt won the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) by 10½ lengths and the Futurity Stakes (G2) by 4¾ lengths.
While D’ Funnybone could either set or press the pace in the Hutcheson, expect to see Monarch Stables’ Wildcat Frankie among the front-runners. The Wildcat Heir colt has won two of three career starts, including a pacesetting 15½-length romp in his career debut on December 12 at Calder Race Course.
Ibboyee will make his first start outside of New York on Saturday for trainer Todd Pletcher. The Medallist colt won three stakes for New York-breds and enters off a fourth-place finish in the Count Fleet Stakes on January 2 at Aqueduct.
A Little Warm, winner of the Spectacular Bid Stakes on January 9 at Gulfstream in his most recent start, and Jack Price Juvenile stakes winner Hear Ye Hear Ye will make their graded stakes debuts on Saturday.
Also on Saturday’s card, Grade 1 winner Rahy’s Attorney heads a strong field of nine in the $150,000 Canadian Turf Stakes (G3).
The six-year-old Crown Attorney gelding, winner of the 2008 Woodbine Mile Stakes (Can-G1) and Canada’s champion turf male for that year, enters the one-mile race off a runner-up finish in the River City Handicap (G3) on November 27 at Churchill Downs.
Other entrants include multiple Grade 3 winner Le Grand Cru, Grade 3 winner and recent Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes winner Jet Propulsion, and TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) runner up Courageous Cat.
The $150,000 Honey Fox Stakes (G3) at one mile on the turf for older fillies and mares drew a full field of 14, including Grade 1 winner Backseat Rhythm, Grade 2 winner Belmont Cat (NZ), and red-hot Grade 3 winner Wasted Tears, winner of six of her seven most recent starts.
