Turf Sprint winner Desert Code retired

Desert Code, who won the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in 2008, has been retired. Stud plans have not been made for the six-year-old E Dubai horse out of Chatta Code, by Lost Code.

Desert Code’s final start was a defense of his Turf Sprint upset on November 7 at Santa Anita Park for owner Susan Osborne. He finished 13th of 14 and had been breezing regularly this winter at Santa Anita for trainer David Hofmans through his most recent workout on January 25.

“His career is over as a racehorse,” Hofmans told Daily Racing Form. “We’re looking for a place where he can stand.”

Desert Code registered four stakes wins on turf and another on Cushion Track in the 2007 Affirmed Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park, where he also finished second in the ’08 Mervyn Leroy Handicap (G2). He edged Diabolical by a half-length at 36.50-to-1 odds in the 2008 Turf Sprint.

ClassicStar bred Desert Code, who notched seven wins overall in 24 starts and earned $1,088,939.
