Holy Bull Stakes (G3) winner Winslow Homer is out of contention for the Triple Crown following the detection of a stress fracture in a cannon bone.
Owner Rick Porter said the injury was discovered after the Unbridled’s Song colt displayed sensitivity in a shin on Sunday morning. He will be out of training for 60 to 90 days.
“Winslow should return to training in early April,” Porter said. “This is another tough-luck story for me and the Fox Hill fans, but hopefully we will have a huge summer and fall with Winslow Homer.”
Last year, Porter’s Old Fashioned was an early standout, but he suffered a slab fracture of his right knee in a second-place finish in the Arkansas Derby (G2) and was retired. Porter also owned ill-fated 2008 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) runner-up Eight Belles.
Winslow Homer prevailed by three-quarters of a lengthin the Holy Bull, his stakes debut, after winning consecutive starts at Saratoga Race Course and Philadelphia Park for trainer Tony Dutrow.
