Oaklawn set for 'greatest stakes race' announcement

Oaklawn Park owner Charles Cella and officials from the Oaklawn Jockey Club have sent out invitations to media outlets and others to promote what it calls “one of the greatest stakes races” in the history of the 100-year-old Hot Springs, Arkansas, racetrack.

Specifics were not immediately known about the announcement, which will come at 10 a.m. CST on Thursday at the Post Parade Restaurant at Oaklawn.

The announcement could be about the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1), which opens Oaklawn’s Festival of the South program and has been mentioned as a marquee opportunity to bring together last year’s two Horse of the Year finalists Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta. The Apple Blossom, a 1 1/16-mile event for older fillies and mares, carries a purse of $500,000.

Zenyatta won the 2008 edition of the Apple Blossom, defeating defending older female champion Ginger Punch in her only start outside of Southern California and on dirt.

Rachel Alexandra, who won the 2009 Horse of the Year title by a vote of 130-99, won the Fantasy Stakes (G2) and Martha Washington Stakes during her championship campaign in ’09 for former trainer Hal Wiggins.
