Bejarano escapes serious injury after spill

Posted: Sunday, August 29, 2010 8:59 PM

by Steve Schuelein

Jockey Rafael Bejarano escaped serious injury after a frightening spill during the third race at Del Mar on Sunday.

Bejarano's mount, Wallstreeter, clipped heels on the backstretch of the six-furlong maiden special weight race and unseated him.

Bejarano walked to the track ambulance under his own power and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, for a precautionary examination. He was released from the hospital late Sunday afternoon and was cleared to ride, according to his agent, Joe Ferrer.

Bejarano, third in the U.S. by purse earnings with $9,889,269 through August 28, is expected to return to the saddle at Del Mar Wednesday.

Bejarano, a 28-year-old native of Peru, entered Sunday’s card in second place in the jockey standing with 41 victories, one fewer than Joel Rosario.

The horse was fine and finished the race without the rider. I saw it happen on TVG network and the analyst's kept saying that the horse was ok. It was a scary spill.

Leaving out those minor details, like whether the horse lived, died, or was injured, gives us a glimpse behind the humaneness curtain that veils much of the real attitudes out there. Until the lip service to the horses' welfare translates into real action, the industry doesn't stand a chance of recovering.

I spend a lot of time defending horse racing to those who see it as cruel. Articles like this make me wonder if I'm right to stand up for it.

Yes Mona, that is frustrating! Jim is right. This was posted on Blood-Horse: Bejarano appeared to have been struck by another filly, Include Me Out, while he was on the ground. Wallstreeter continued on and finished the race. So she went "game on" by herself!

Mona,

I believe the horse is OK. She finished the race on her own, as I recall.

It is very frustrating to read an article like this and not be told what happened to the horse.
