Monmouth race call drawing national attention

Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 3:36 PM

by Tom De Martini

Monmouth Park track announcer Larry Collmus never imagined that Sunday’s seventh race at the Oceanport, New Jersey, track, featuring two horses carrying similar tongue-twisting and humorous names, would garner national and international attention.

But the innovative and entertaining call featuring the one-two finish of Welch and Giorgio Stable’s Mywifenosevrything and Edwin Broome’s Thewifedoesntknow has gained significant attention on social media sites and a host of local and national news and sports outlets during the past 72 hours.

The race call’s growing popularity sent Collmus to New York City on Wednesday to tape a featured spot slated for Wednesday night’s nationally syndicated television show, “Inside Edition.”

The 43-year-old Baltimore native, the voice of Monmouth Park since 1994, said the race call’s attention is beyond anything he could have imagined.

“It’s been out of control with all the texts, e-mails, and phone calls I’ve received,” Collmus said. “When I saw the two horses in the race, my first thought is that they’d never be one-two. The names were so alike, I didn’t want to mix them up and never thought they’d finish that way.”

Collmus said the race’s finish and his unique—and accurate—call was not planned or contrived in advance.

“That’s why I said, ‘whew,’ when they crossed the wire,” he said. “It was off the top of my head. I just didn’t want to screw it up.”

Monmouth Park Media Manager John Heims said Collmus’ race call already has appeared on ESPN, ESPN2, NBC’s “TODAY Show,” ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight” with Diane Sawyer, and New York City’s local FOX News affiliate.

Heims said the race call also has appeared on Canadian and New Zealand television stations.

There was a trotter at the Meadowlands called " I Married A Witch". Too bad he didn't round out he didn't round out the triple. Horse racing racing has so many unique moments like this that other sportsa do not.

Great call-back in the day at Sportsman Park and Hawthorne, Phil Georgoff was great at tongue twisters. I remember a stretch battle between Tutti Fruitti and Swoonie Moonie. It is always exciting.
