Trainer Nick Canani handed 30-day suspension

Posted: Thursday, August 19, 2010 6:51 PM

by Neil Milbert

Trainer Nick Canani was suspended for 30 days, beginning August 26, and fined $2,000 by stewards at Arlington Park on Thursday after laboratory tests at the University of Illinois at Chicago revealed the presence of a prohibited medication, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory etodolac, in urine or blood samples from five of his horses.

Three of the horses finished first and two were second in their respective races at Arlington on June 10, 11, and 17 and July 9.

Canani is second in the Arlington trainer standings behind defending champion Wayne Catalano, the track’s leading trainer for seven of the last eight years.

Canani is the private trainer for Catalano’s former patron Frank Calabrese, Arlington’s champion owner for ten consecutive years.

i agree that nick canani is joke for "cheating" and to those of you that don't believe he is cheating, then you are off your rocker, after all he would not be suffering this weak penalty if he wasn't. i dont know why leonard has a hard on for the west coast stewards, but do some research, jeff mullins, ted west, etc and look at their penalties for past infractions. everyone seems to get a slap on the wrist and a small fine, this is a huge problem through out the US, not just the midwest where canani actaully resides, our the east coast...

Nick Canani use to train out West, but due to his shadyness he was run out of town and sent back East where all the shady trainer's reside, trainer's like him are ruining the sport, it's too bad he does-not follow in the foot step's of his father Julio who train's out West and is very successful. He should be given a LIFE TIME BAN from the sport. Nick does-not properly take care of his horse's that's why he no longer train's in the West, he was sent packing to the East where there they don't care. $2000.00 fine, WHAT A JOKE, and a little slap in the hand. Way to look out for the horse's East Coast steward's :(

Jordan, there's more going on here than 'aspirin' type things. It's no coincidence that all 5 positive horses ran first or second. These guys are ruining racing, and need to be banned for life after X of positives, not like that cobra venom trainer- off for a yr., now back. Oh, and it IS the trainers responsibility to know withdrawal times. As posted earlier, if a horse is too sore to run without drugs, give it time off.

I love how all you comment on this and have no clue what the hell this actually is. He's giving his horse an anti inflammatory. Not Steroids! If you think letting a horse have swelling all over and be sore, nicer than giving him some antibiodics to releave pain and swelling then your just a moron. This would be like if you had a headache and took medication. He proably gave it too close to race day and didn't realize it.

Brings to mind a good quote from a California Horse Owner. "Just look at the top of the Standings and you'll find the Dopers"
