Brereton Jones’ homebred No Such Word left five challengers in her wake and flashed a strong finishing kick as she captured the $198,000 Monmouth Oaks (G3) on Saturday at Monmouth Park.
Trained by Cindy Jones, No Such Word seized the lead entering the stretch and authoritatively charged to a 1½-length victory, covering 1 1/16 miles on a track rated as fast in 1:45.10.
No Such Word raced in fourth as Patriotic Viva, with Joe Bravo aboard, led through a half-mile in :47.67. Jockey Terry Thompson swung No Such Word four wide on the turn and gave the filly her cue. The move proved smart as No Such Word built a 2 ½-length lead near the eighth pole and put enough distance between herself and the field to hold off deep closer Seeking the Title.
“I knew the outside horse [Seeking the Title] would be running late, so I wanted to make sure I got the jump on her,” Thompson said. “The trip set up ideally for us.”
Seeking the Title, entering off a fifth-place finish to Devil May Care in the Betfair TVG Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), was held more than 10 ½ lengths off the pace through a half-mile. The Iowa Oaks (G3) winner surged in the stretch, but ultimately moved too late and finished second, eight lengths better than third-place finisher C C’s Pal.
No Such Word, a three-year-old Canadian Frontier filly, entered off a respectable fourth-place finish, beaten 2 ¾ lengths by Blind Luck, in the Delaware Oaks (G2) on July 10. She won the Honeybee Stakes (G3) in March at Oaklawn Park.
No Such Word improved to five wins from 13 career starts and earnings of $383,213. She is one of seven winners from eight starters out of the winning It’s Freezing mare Muskoka Ice.
