Winslow Homer sidelined with condylar fracture

Posted: Monday, August 02, 2010 4:34 PM

Winslow Homer came out of his nine-length win in Sunday’s Curlin Stakes at Saratoga Race Course with a condylar fracture of the left front leg, knocking him out of contention for the Shadwell Travers Stakes (G1).

Trainer Tony Dutrow said a screw would probably be inserted to stabilize the injured leg.

“We're anticipating he'll come back,” said Dutrow, who trains Winslow Homer for Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farms. “It's a pretty simple procedure.”

Winslow Homer missed five months earlier this year with a stress fracture in his right front cannon bone, detected soon after he won the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) on January 23 at Gulfstream Park.

Dutrow also trains Travers candidate A Little Warm, who won the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Saratoga.

Unbridled's Song puts out some stunning offspring, But...rather fragile. Also, Very successful at the sales thus the reason he is always one of the top sires! I had a stallion by Unbridled and he retired because of bad legs. Quite the dispostion though. If I could have a horse by any sire...I would defitnitly go with Medaglia d'oro.

Unbridled's Song is infamous for getting precocious progeny with weak bones...most of which are done by the mid part of their three year old seasons. This does not bode well for the sport. We need more sound breeding practices, but greed seems to be winning out.

Sounds like what many trainers would rather do to horses that aren't sound...screw it.

If a horse continues to come out of races with fractures, be it stress or condylar or what have you..don't you think it's a sign that perhaps the horse should NOT be run?

Casey......you hit the nail on the head! Unbridleds Song puts fragile legs on his babies, but that doesn't seem to stop breeders who want that top 2 year old. Too bad the 2 year olds don't train on. I would not breed to that stallion if you gave me a breeding. I would sell it and breed to Quiet American. Oh wait......I did that already :)
