Lookin At Lucky tops Triple Crown poll

With the defection of ailing Eskendereya from the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), it was not surprising that Lookin At Lucky ranked first in the final THOROUGHBRED TIMES Road to the Triple Crown poll of editors, reporters, and correspondents.

During the first ten weeks of the poll the top spot was held by either Lookin At Lucky (four times) or Eskendereya (six times), demonstrating the perceived domination of these two colts among this year’s three-year-old crop.

What was surprising is that morning line favorite Lookin At Lucky was not the runaway selection one might have expected as some voters may have felt some trepidation about last year’s champion two-year-old male drawing the rail for the Derby. While that post is tied with number five at 12 victories each as the most since 1900, the last victor from post one was Ferdinand in 1986.

“This horse, he can’t catch a break,” Lookin At Lucky’s trainer Bob Baffert said after the post positions were announced. “We named him wrong. Can we change the name?”

Sidney’s Candy, second choice on the Churchill Downs morning line for the Derby, was also the voter’s second choice in the poll after drawing post position 20, the same post from which Big Brown won the 2008 Derby.

Sidney’s Candy was followed closely by Ice Box, Awesome Act, and the filly Devil May Care to complete the top five.
