Kentucky Oaks (G1) morning-line favorite Blind Luck will break from post five in the 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-old fillies on Friday at Churchill Downs.
The five spot fit in the wide range trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and jockey Rafael Bejarano considered favorable for the three-time Grade 1 winner.
“I think that post is good. I was talking to Rafael this morning and we thought that anywhere from the five on out to the ten would be all right for us,” said Hollendorfer after watching the draw in the front row with about 40 people gathered in the Churchill Downs racing office. “Rafael’s happy with that.”
While Blind Luck enters her final few days of Oaks preparation, her connections will not have to worry about Grade 1 winner Devil May Care, who was not entered. Trainer Todd Pletcher already had announced plans to race the Frizette Stakes (G1) winner in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and opted not to hedge with a cross entry in the Oaks.
Also not in the Oaks field is Charles Fipke’s Seeking the Title, who trainer Dallas Stewart attempted to enter but was excluded because the field is limited to 14. Seeking the Title earned $21,000 with a dead-heat third-place finish earlier this year in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2).
Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Evening Jewel, who finished just a nose behind Blind Luck in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1), will break from post 11. Trainer Jim Cassidy said the outside draw will allow the Northern Afleet filly to stay off the early pace and angle toward an inside position.
Trainer Dale Romans is comfortable with Fair Grounds Oaks winner Quiet Temper breaking from post three, noting he wanted to avoid the inside post or an outside post. The two fillies inside Quiet Temper, Silverbulletday Stakes (G3) winner Jody Slew and Ashland runner-up It’s Tea Time, typically rally from off the pace.
Santa Anita Oaks (G1) winner Crisp will start from post seven and Davona Dale Stakes (G2) winner Amen Hallelujah will start from post 13. Age of Humor will start from post four; Beautician, post six; Tidal Pool, post eight; Bella Diamante, post nine; Champagne d’Oro, post ten; Ailalea, post 12, and Joanie’s Catch, post 14.
