She Be Wild injured, will miss Kentucky Oaks

Posted: Sunday, April 18, 2010 9:18 PM

Nancy Mazzoni's homebred She Be Wild, champion two-year-old filly of 2009, will miss the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on April 30 after sustaining a fracture to her left front pastern on Sunday morning during a routine gallop at Keeneland Race Course, Daily Racing Form reported.

The Offlee Wild filly underwent surgery later in the day to repair the injury and will be sidelined indefinitely.

"Dr. Gary Priest inserted a screw in the leg, and everything went well," trainer Wayne Catalano told the Form about She Be Wild, who finished third in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) at the Lexington track on April 3 in her most recent start. "The filly's fine now, and that's the main thing. Obviously, we're very sad about it, but it's part of the game."

She Be Wild won four of five starts during her two-year-old campaign, which was capped by her three-quarter-length triumph in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on November 6 at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park en route to the Eclipse Award in her division. The filly will recuperate at Mazzoni’s farm in Lexington.

One wonders, when something like this happens, if the owners should have taken the money for her when they got offers last year. Oh well, she is worth a lot as a broodmare in any case and her foals at auction should sell very well if they put them through the sales ring. Hopefully, she can race again, if that is what the owners and trainers want.

With an injury like this, I would be surprised if she returns, much less to the top form she has displayed in the past. I just hope she recovers and lives a long life
