Jockey James Graham secures 1,000th career win

Posted: Thursday, April 15, 2010 5:31 PM

Irish-born jockey James Graham picked up his 1,000th career victory on Thursday when Mint Chip won the seventh race at Keeneland Race Course.

Trained by Rusty Arnold for Green Lantern Stables, the three-year-old Johar gelding won the allowance race by two lengths while covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.67 on the synthetic Polytrack surface

Born in Dublin, Ireland, the 30-year-old Graham has enjoyed some of his greatest successes at the Lexington track. Graham earned his first Grade 1 win in the 2009 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) aboard Hot Cha Cha.

He has won 55 stakes, including ten graded stakes, since picking up his first mount in 2003.

“I get the same excitement from winning a $5,000 claimer as I do from winning an allowance race,” Graham said. “I always try to learn a little bit more every day.”

One of seven children, Graham entered Ireland’s jockey school at age 15. Following the ten-month course, he went on to work for trainer John Oxx before moving to the U.S. in 2002. He won his first race on July 1, 2003, at River Downs and is a regular rider on the Illinois and Louisiana circuits.

I have the pleasure to know Jim and I must say he gives you 150percent on every thing he rides. He is one of the hardest working riders that I have seen. If he not at the track he must be at another one,it is a rare thing not to see him EARLY IN THE MORNING
