Six horses nominated late to Triple Crown

Posted: Thursday, April 01, 2010 3:06 PM

by Jeff Lowe

Six horses joined the list of Triple Crown candidates during the late nomination phase that ended on Saturday.

Carnivore, Game Ball, Posse Power, Raise the Bridle, Thomas Baines, and Yawanna Twist all were made eligible for the $6,000 late nomination fee.

Carnivore [Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Aqueduct], Game Ball and Yawanna Twist [Illinois Derby (G3) at Hawthorne Race Course], and Posse Power and Thomas Baines [Santa Anita Derby (G1)] all have major opportunities on Saturday to crack the field for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

The additions push the total number of Triple Crown nominees to 372 horses, down from 412 last year. Late nominations declined from 11 in 2009.

Owners still have a chance to supplement their horses to the Derby and Preakness Stakes (G1) for $200,000 on April 28 and for $100,000 on entry day for the Preakness.

Last year’s Preakness winner, Rachel Alexandra, was supplemented to the race.

Raise the Bridle represents Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Suerte Equine, the same owners of last year’s Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mine That Bird. Raise the Bridle finished first and was disqualified to second in the Borderland Derby on February 27 at Sunland Park in his most recent start.

Yawanna Twist finished second in the Gotham Stakes (G3) on March 6 at Aqueduct in his most recent for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., who swept the 2008 Derby and Preakness with Big Brown.
