Given a perfect pace-stalking trip by jockey Jamie Theriot, Chamberlain Bridge overtook Blue Sailor in the final furlong to win the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup Handicap at Penn National Race Course.

Trained by Bret Calhoun for owner Carl R. Moore Management, Chamberlain Bridge held off late challenges from runner-up Phosphorescent and third-place finisher Sneaking Uponyou to win his eighth stakes race. The six-year-old War Chant gelding covered five furlongs on firm turf in :55.06 as the 1.30-to-1 favorite.

Chamberlain Bridge finished third in last year’s Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup behind winner Cardashi and Blue Sailor, who seized the early lead on Saturday.

With Chamberlain Bridge about a length behind, Blue Sailor led through a quarter mile in :21.48 and a half-mile in :43.54. Chamberlain Bridge then powered past that opponent and easily turned back several late challengers for his third win from five starts this season.

Bred in Kentucky by Eugene Melnyk, Chamberlain Bridge, winner of the 2009 Aegon Turf Sprint Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, improved to 14 wins from 28 starts and earnings of $894,245. His is one of two winners from three starters out of the Trempolino mare She’s Got Class.
