Five-time stakes winner Smart Surprise retired

John G. Sikura has retired Smart Surprise, a five-time stakes winner and candidate for Canadian champion older female for 2009.

Breeding plans are pending for the five-year-old Smart Strike mare out of Weekend Storm, by Storm Bird. She is a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Court Vision and stakes winners Garcia Marquez and Lord Snowdon.

Smart Surprise began the year with a victory in the Chou Croute Handicap at Fair Grounds and reeled off consecutive wins in the Hendrie Stakes (Can-G3) (video), Hill ‘n’ Dale Stakes, and Ontario Matron Stakes at Woodbine for trainer Josie Carroll.

Bred in Kentucky by W. S. Farish and Kilroy Thoroughbred Partnership, Smart Surprise won seven of 22 career starts and earned $508,709. Her second dam is 1992 Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, by Secretariat, who also produced Horse of the Year A.P. Indy and classic winner Summer Squall.
