Two-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Garrett Gomez escaped serious injury following a spill in the ninth race on Saturday at Hollywood Park.

“They’re releasing him to go home,” agent Ron Anderson said on Saturday evening after Gomez underwent x-rays to his right elbow and right shoulder at Centinela Hospital. “He’s okay. He’s sore. Nothing’s broken. He dodged a bullet.”

Gomez was aboard Bonnie Brown Eyes in the seven-furlong nightcap and led in the stretch when the two-year-old filly broke down near the sixteenth pole and unseated the rider. He was placed in an ambulance on a stretcher and driven to near-by Centinela.

Bonnie Brown Eyes, a homebred owned by Nathaniel Friedman and making her second start for trainer Mike Mitchell in the $32,000 claiming race, was fatally injured after initially fracturing her right front ankle and then suffering a broken neck when she hit the track.

Gomez, 37, has led the nation in purse earnings the past three years. He ranks second in 2009 with more than $17.4-million in earnings.
