Twin Sparks, a six-year-old Twining gelding, set a North American record for six furlongs on dirt when he won the $50,000 Caballos del Sol Handicap in 1:06.49 on Saturday at Turf Paradise.
Trained by Karl Myers for owner Bobbie Parsons, Twin Sparks won by 11¼ lengths at odds of 9.50-to-1 under jockey Luis Medina.
“He felt like he was going that fast,” Medina said.
The previous North American six-furlong record on dirt was 1:06.60, set by G Malleah at Turf Paradise on April 8, 1995.
The win was Twin Sparks’ first career stakes victory and snapped a six-race winless skid dating back to November 2008
“He’s a nice old horse who’s had a few problems,” Myers said. “I guess he’s doing a lot better today.”
Bred in Kentucky by John Franks, Twin Sparks improved to eight wins from 22 starts and earnings of $123,423. Twin Sparks is one of four winners from as many starters out of multiple stakes winner Sparklin Lil, by Mr. Sparkles.
