Madam Can Fly first winner for High Fly

Madam Can Fly rebounded from an unplaced finish in her career debut with a half-length victory in the fifth race on Wednesday night at Woodbine to become the first career winner for 2005 Florida Derby (G1) victor High Fly.

Trained and owned by Daniel Vella, the dark bay or brown filly completed the five-furlong maiden claiming race in :58.73 on the synthetic Polytrack surface. Bred in Florida by Live Oak Stud, Madam High Fly is out of the winning Roar mare Madam Rochas a daughter of Argentine champion Rosadora (Arg).

A seven-year-old by Atticus out of the Grade 1-placed Slewpy mare Verbasle, High Fly stood the 2009 season for $3,500 at T.W. Stables in Booneville Indiana. A half brother to multiple Group 3 winner Estimraar, High Fly has 19 two-year-olds in his first crop.

High Fly won five of nine career starts and earned $927,300 in two racing seasons. In 2005, he won the Florida Derby, Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), and Aventura Stakes. He finished tenth that year in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
