Sam-Son Farms’ Eye of the Leopard won his stakes debut on Sunday at Woodbine with a determined neck victory in the $139,262 Plate Trial Stakes, a key prep for the Queen’s Plate, Canada’s most prestigious race and the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.

The A.P. Indy colt out of 2004 Canadian champion three-year-old filly Eye of the Sphynx, by Smart Strike, rated just off the pace while racing four wide throughout under Eurico Da Silva and wore down Southdale to score in the final strides as the 5.55-to-1 third wagering choice.

Trained by Mark Frostad, Eye of the Leopard covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.80 on the synthetic Polytrack surface.

Pacesetter Costalivin was pressed by 2.30-to-1 second choice Southdale through six furlongs in a moderate 1:13.78. Southdale engaged that opponent at the quarter pole and shook loose with a furlong to run. Eye of Leopard uncoiled his winning rally in early stretch and steadily reeled in Southdale for the victory.

Third-place finisher Rapid Release finished two lengths behind Southdale. El Brujo, the 1.65-to-1 favorite, tired and finished ninth in the ten-horse field.

Eye of the Leopard won his second straight race after a disappointing eighth-place finish in his career debut on April 15 at Keeneland Race Course. He entered the Plate Trial off a convincing 2 ¾-length win at Woodbine on May 10.

Sam-Son Farms has previously captured the Queen’s Plate with Dancethruthedawn (2001), Scatter the Gold (’00), Dance Smartly (1991), and Regal Intention (’88). The Queen’s Plate is set for June 21 at Woodbine.
