A hearing on the positive test for a banned substance in $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) winner It’s a Bird will be held June 9 at the next meeting of the Arkansas Racing Commission in Little Rock, the director of the commission said Thursday.

Owned by Edmund Gann, the six-year-old dark bay or brown Birdonthewire horse out of the Hooched mare Faithful City tested positive in both halves of a split sample for the anti-inflammatory drug Naproxen. A positive test for the drug is considered a Class 4 violation that could result in the loss of the purse, a fine, and suspension.

It’s a Bird, one of the top older runners in the country, won the Oaklawn Handicap on April 4 by six lengths, running the 1 1/8-mile race in 1:48.96. (video)

The horse, trained by Marty Wolfson, returned to win the $400,000 Lone Star Park Handicap (G3) on Monday (video). Wolfson is expected at the hearing, said Ron Oliver, manager of the commission’s division in Little Rock..

Wolfson could not be reached for comment.

Results from tests following the Lone Star Park Handicap are pending, said Texas Racing Commission public information officer Jean Cook.
