Multiple graded stakes winner Pyro is back in training and scheduled to join Godolphin Racing later this year.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Darley operation assumed ownership of Pyro at the end of his three-year-old season, the culmination of an agreement with Winchell Thoroughbreds that was announced the day after his victory in the 2008 Louisiana Derby (G2) (video).

Pyro underwent surgery for a knee chip following a sixth-place finish in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park (video), his final race for Winchell Thoroughbreds and trainer Steve Asmussen.

Pyro breezed three furlongs in :38 on May 16 at Keeneland Race Course in his first workout of the year.

“The focus was always to freshen him and point toward a campaign during the second half of the season with Godolphin,” said Jimmy Bell, the president of Darley USA. “He’s a very consistent horse. From 13 starts, he’s been on the board ten times, and he’s been well campaigned. He had four starts as a two-year-old and nine as a three-year-old, which is a testament to him.”

Bell said as Pyro moves closer to a return to the races, he would join Godolphin’s string in New York with Rick Mettee, the American-based assistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Besides the Louisiana Derby, Pyro also won the Risen Star Stakes (G3) (video) and Northern Dancer Stakes (G3) (video) in 2008. He finished second to champion War Pass in the 2007 Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).

Pyro’s half sister, War Echo, won the Silverbulletday Stakes (G3) in February for Winchell and Asmussen.
