Triumphant Flight set the pace and repelled a challenge from Charlie’s Moment in late stretch to win the $87,800 San Miguel Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park off a layoff of more than 5½ months.
Trained by Eric Kruljac for owner Tyler Seltzer, the three-year-old Chullo (Arg) colt earned his second stakes victory, covering six furlongs on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface in 1:09.54.
Triumphant Flight seized the lead out of the gate under Victor Espinzoa at 7.20-to-1 odds and led through a quarter-mile in :22.44 and half-mile in :45.49.
Charlie’s Moment moved to second and challenged for the lead in early stretch from the outside, but Triumphant Flight held on to win by a half-length. Charlie’s Moment finished second, one length in front of third-place finisher Turk.
Triumphant Flight entered off a second-place finish in the California Cup Juvenile Stakes at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita on October 5.
Bred in California by Applebite Farms, Triumphant Flight improved to three wins and two runner-up finishes in five career starts and boosted his earnings to $206,543.
