Our Man Luke gives Mason 1,000th career win

Posted: Sunday, June 28, 2009 4:40 PM

Our Man Luke closed from off the pace under Russell Baze in the fifth race on Saturday at the San Joaquin County Fair at Stockton to prevail as the favorite and give trainer Lloyd Mason his 1,000th career victory.

The three-year-old Catienus gelding was reserved in sixth early in the 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming race and launched his winning bid from three wide in the stretch. Our Man Luke reeled in runner-up Hot Chaco in the closing strides to cement the milestone for Mason.

Mason, who took out his trainer’s license in 1980, earned his most lucrative career win when No Commitment won the $125,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes in 1988. Mason also trained Grand Exchange, who won seven stakes for Mason from 1986 through ’88.
