At long last, Ashland Stakes (G1) winner Hooh Why will take a dirt test on Friday night against Dogwood Stakes (G3) winner Hightap in the $200,000 Iowa Oaks (G3) at Prairie Meadows Racetrack.
Hooh Why has performed well in some heavy company this year, toppling both Gozzip Girl and Stardom Bound in the Ashland at 24-to-1 odds (video) and scoring a stakes victory at Woodbine over Milwaukee Appeal, who was the morning-line favorite in Sunday’s Queen’s Plate Stakes.
Hooh Why has hit the board in all five of her starts this year, all of which have been on synthetic surfaces. After the Ashland, she bypassed the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and was scratched from the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Race Course in favor of the La Lorgnette Stakes on the Polytrack at Woodbine, where she prevailed by a half-length at 9-to-10 odds (video).
As a two-year-old, the Cloud Hopping filly finished third in the Sandpiper Stakes at six furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs in her only previous start on dirt.
Hightap broke through for a 3¼-length win in the Dogwood on May 30 at Churchill Downs for trainer Steve Asmussen and owner Winchell Thoroughbreds (video).
Sweet Relish will step up in the Iowa Oaks after recording wins in her first two dirt starts. The Smoke Glacken filly won an allowance race on April 10 at Oaklawn Park and the Cinemine Stakes on May 25 at Lone Star Park (video) for trainer Donnie Von Hemel and owner-breeder Pin Oak Stable.
Also on Friday’s card, Terrain will seek his first win of the year in the $250,000 Iowa Derby, which will be his first start since a seventh-place finish in the BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 16 (video).
The Sky Mesa gelding finished third in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and fourth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) in his two other starts this year. As a two-year-old, Terrain won the Arlington Washington Futurity (G3) on a double disqualification.
The $100,000 Saylorville Stakes for fillies and mares attracted Lady Chace, who finished second was disqualified to third behind Dubai Majesty in the Winning Colors Stakes on May 25 at Churchill (video).
Miranda Diane, Adhsilver, Nursery Rhyme, and Hadavision all enter the seven-furlong Saylorville off stakes wins.
