Dunkirk, who finished a game second to Summer Bird after setting the pace in the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 6 (video), is recovering well after undergoing surgery on June 9 for a non-displaced condylar fracture in his left rear cannon bone.
Patricia Hogan, V.M.D, performed the surgery at the new Ruffian Equine Medical Center across the street from Belmont Park. A screw was inserted during the surgery to stabilize the cannon bone.
“It was as unproblematic as you could ask for,” said Jonathan Thomas, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher. “He went over there at 11 o’clock, was back in his stall at 4 p.m., and the surgery itself took maybe 15 minutes.”
Dunkirk, a $3.7-million purchase by Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale, finished second in the Florida Derby Presented by BlackBerry (G1) prior to an 11th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).
The Unbridled’s Song colt will complete his recovery at Ashford Stud in Lexington.
