Lewis Lakin’s Pure Clan, kept on the outside and in the clear by jockey Julien Leparoux, rallied smartly from the back of the pack and wore down pacesetter Tizaqueena for a 2½-length victory in the $200,000 Modesty Handicap (G3) at Arlington Park on Saturday.

The four-year-old Pure Prize filly had been away from the races for eight months before returning on June 6 to just miss catching Acoma by a neck in the Early Times Mint Julep Handicap (G3) at 1 1/16-miles at Churchill Downs.

Pure Clan was stretching out to 1 3/16-miles in the Modesty Leparoux bided his time while keeping the chestnut filly clear of any trouble, then came up to challenge Tizaqueena turning for home and drew clear late, stopping the timer in 1:55.27 on the firm turf course.

Tizaqueena held second, a neck in front of third-place finisher of Dynaforce.

Trained by Bob Holthus, Pure Clan was winning her seventh race from 13 starts, and has only been off the board once in her career while earning $1,193,998.

Winner of last year’s American Oaks Invitational Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park, Pure Clan is out of the Grade 3-winning General Assembly mare Gather the Clan (Ire) and is a half sister to Grade 2 winner Greater Good.
