Last year’s Arlington Handicap (G3) winner Stream Cat will face Cosmonaut, a two-time winner of the 1 1/4-mile race, on Saturday as part of the suburban Chicago track’s “Arlington Million (G1) Preview Day.”
Stream Cat has won six career stakes races, including this year’s Tokyo City Cup Handicap (G3) at Santa Anita Park (video). Cosmonaut, who finished second in last year’s Arlington Handicap, will try to win the race a third time after winning in 2006 and ’07.
Also in the race that serves as a prep for the Arlington Million, Grade 1-placed Just as Well will try to secure his first stakes win. A six-year-old A.P. Indy Horse, Just as Well has placed in three graded stakes this year, including a runner-up finish to Kip Deville in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) (video).
Nine-year-old gelding and crowd favorite Silverfoot will attempt to secure his second consecutive win on the Arlington turf after taking the Tin Man Stakes on June 6 (video).
Also on Saturday’s card, Giant Oak will try to secure the first graded stakes win of his career in the American Derby (G2). After winning his career debut on turf last year, Giant Oak tried the main track in several Triple Crown prep races this year. The Giant’s Causeway colt registered his strongest main-track effort in the Illinois Derby (G2) when second to eventual Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (G1) third-place finisher Musket Man. Switched back to turf, Giant Oak secured a clear victory in the Arlington Classic on May 23 (video).
In Saturday’s Modesty Handicap (G3), Grade 1 winner Pure Clan will attempt to register her first win of the season and snap a three-race losing streak that has come against top competition. Last year’s American Oaks Invitational Stakes (G1) winner closed out the year with a runner-up finish to Backseat Rhythm in the Garden City Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and a ninth-place finish in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1).
A four-year-old Pure Prize filly, Pure Clan opened this season with a narrow second to Acoma on June 6 in the Early Times Mint Julep Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs (video).
Dynaforce, winner of last year’s Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park (video), could provide Pure Clan’s biggest test.
In the Arlington Sprint Stakes, Chamberlain Bridge will try to secure his third consecutive stakes win in a turf sprint this season. The race is a “Win and You’re In” challenge race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
