Lecomte Stakes (G3) runner-up Patena breezed six furlongs on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, and trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said the Seeking the Gold colt is on target for the $600,000 Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 14.

Purchased privately after the Lecomte by IEAH Stables, who raced 2008 dual classic winner Big Brown, Patena covered six furlongs in 1:15.60 under exercise rider Mario Madrid.

"Mario told me that he pulled him to every pole this morning," Dutrow said. "He was very happy with him. We've got one more breeze to go here and then we will fly to New Orleans on [March 12]. I'm under the impression we are right on target."

Patena has two wins and two seconds in five starts, including a victory in the 2008 Display Stakes at Woodbine for previous owners John G. Sikura , Glenn Sikura, and Dominic Dilalla and trainer Josie Carroll. He has not raced since rallying from off the pace to finish second to Friesan Fire in the Lecomte on January 10 at Fair Grounds.

"When we got him [to Florida] we wanted to go to work on some hind-end issues and try to help him put some weight on," Dutrow said.

"He had been coughing for about ten days. Today was the first day he scoped completely clean. We've been clearing different issues, and it seems to all be coming together."

Out of Grade 1-placed multiple stakes winner Handpainted, by A.P. Indy, Patena is from the family of 1989 Canadian Horse of the Year With Approval and 1997 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner and sire Touch Gold.
