Turfway Park cancels added Monday card

Turfway Park’s live racing card on Monday, which was added to help the Florence, Kentucky, track make up races lost by six full or partial cancellations, was canceled because of a lack of entries.

Winter weather forced Turfway to cancel five full or partial race cards in January and one in February.

“Hingsight is 20/20, and we missed the mark in terms of the horse population that would be available to fill additional racing days,” Turfway President Robert Elliston said. “Horses that otherwise would prefer to run in Kentucky, and traditionally did so, are instead racing in jurisdictions where purses are enhanced with revenue from alternative gaming. Kentucky has not been permitted to level the playing field, and we are beginning to feel the effects of the competitive advantage other states have over us, tradition or not.”

A commemorative poster giveaway and autograph signing by Kentucky Derby winning jockeys Chris McCarron and Mike Manganello that was slated for Monday will be rescheduled, with details to be announced at a later date.
