Three of the top four finishers from last month’s Forward Gal Stakes (G2) will return to Gulfstream Park on Sunday for the $150,000 Davona Dale Stakes (G2).
The one-mile race for three-year-old fillies drew a field of nine, including Frolic’s Dream and Renda, the top two finishers from the seven-furlong Forward Gal on January 30, and Grade 3 winner C. S. Silk, who finished fourth.
Frolic’s Dream will make her first start for Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables and trainer Barclay Tagg following a private purchase two weeks ago. The Smoke Glacken filly won four of her five career starts, including all three of her starts as a juvenile, for previous owners Dare To Dream Farm and then-trainer Marty Wolfson.
“We’ve kind of been babying her,” Tagg said. “She came to us great and they told us everything about her. We let her play in the sand pit and eat grass every day. She seems happy.”
Frolic’s Dream won the Cassidy Stakes on October 18 at Calder Race Course by 12¾ lengths before finishing her season with a 1 ¼-length victory in the Joe O’Farrell Juvenile Fillies Stakes on November 8 at the Miami track.
Frolic’s Dream opened her three-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the Old Hat Stakes (G3) on January 4 before bouncing back with a 2 1/2-length triumph over Renda in the Forward Gal in her previous start.
Frolic’s Dream breezed five furlongs in 1:03.20 on Tuesday at Gulfstream. The breeze was the fifth fastest of six timed moves at the distance.
“Her workout wasn’t exactly what I would have wanted, but it worked,” Tagg said. “She’s been really nice. She’s nice to gallop. She does everything nice.”
Richard Rowan’s Renda won three of her six starts as a juvenile, including the Junior Champion Stakes on August 23 at Monmouth Park and the Brave Raj Stakes on September 27 at Calder.
The Medaglia d’Oro filly, trained by Juan Arias, finished tenth of 12 behind Maram in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 24 during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park.
Renda opened her season with the runner-up finish to Frolic’s Dream in the Forward Gal under jockey Edgar Prado, who will retain the mount in the Davona Dale.
C. S. Silk won last year’s Arlington-Washington Lassie takes (G3) at Arlington Park prior to a seventh-place finish behind Stardom Bound in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
Also by Medaglia d’Oro, C. S. Silk finished second in the Boyd Gaming’s Delta Princess Powered by Youbet.com Stakes (G3) on December 5 prior to her fourth-place finish in the Forward Gal.
Justwhistledixie enters off back-to-back stakes triumphs in the Love Affair Stakes on November 28 and the Ruthless Stakes on January 24, both at Aqueduct, for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
