Multiple graded stakes winner Jibboom set a measured pace on Monday in the $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap (G2) and powered clear in the stretch to a 2 1/2-length score under Garrett Gomez.
Jibboom finished second to stablemate Ventura in the Santa Monica Handicap (G1) in her previous start. With the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner out of the way in the Buena Vista, Jibboom dominated as the 6-to-5 favorite.
The five-year-old Mizzen Mast mare controlled the tempo through a half-mile in :50.30 and six furlongs in 1:15.18 in the one-mile race, which was moved from the turf course to the main track because of heavy rain on Monday. Tizfiz stalked Jibboom from second with Foxysox (GB) rated in third by Rafael Bejarano.
Tizfiz made her bid nearing the quarter pole but Jibboom spurted away when roused by Gomez and powered to an easy victory in 1:38.68 on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface.
"She was comfortable with me the whole way. It's a little deep out there, kind of like a soft, deep turf and she's been running on firm ground, but she handled it well,” Gomez said of the main track. “When I asked her to accelerate, she did so willingly. She's a beautiful filly and she does everything right."
Foxysox finished three lengths clear of third-place finisher Tizfiz.
Jibboom is trained by Bobby Frankel for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms. Frankel won the Buena Vista for the fourth time in his career.
Jibboom improved to five wins and four seconds from 11 starts and boosted her bankroll to $487,600. She won the 2007 Lexus Raven Run Stakes (G2) and opened her 2009 season with a victory in the Monrovia Handicap (G3).
